Resources, Resilience & Resistance
I’ll be part a symposium celebrating the 60 years of the PhD Architecture program at Penn and discussing the future of doctoral research and scholarship, description below:
This Event is In-Person only.
On the occasion of the PhD Program in Architecture at the Weitzman School of Design celebrating 60 Years as a program, the graduate group faculty and students will host a day of conversations on the future of doctoral research and scholarship in architecture. Invited speakers include S.E. Eisterer, Lydia Kallipoliti, Ana María León, Jonathan Massey, John Ochsendorf, and Theodora Vardouli.
SCHEDULE
9.30 AM - 11.15 AM
SESSION 1 _ Resources: Material, Computational, and Critical
In navigating the ever increasing of terrain of resource loss and precarious sourcing, how can research on non-extractive technologies, waste valorization, biogenic materials, optimized and lightweight structures, and computational narratives help us live and build with less?
SPEAKERS
John Ochsendorf Professor, Department of Architecture, MIT
Theodora Vardouli Associate Professor, Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture, McGill University
1.30 PM - 3.15 PM
SESSION 2_ Resilience: Ecology, Energy and Equity
In recognizing that we have reached the limit of human survivability, how might imaginaries of extreme survival, extraplanetary remediation, mitigation of extreme heat, regenerative bio-spheres, and equitable energy policies sustain our desire for a better tomorrow?
SPEAKERS
Lydia Kallipoliti Associate Professor, GSAPP, Columbia University
Jonathan Massey Dean and Professor of Architecture, Taubman College, University of Michigan
3.30 PM - 5.15 PM
SESSION 3_ Resistance: Identity and Community
In acknowledging the renewed force with which some seek to silence the voices, methods, and projects of the many, what forms of knowledge formation can we share that resist social, gender, labor, colonial, and political injustices?
SPEAKERS
S.E. Eisterer Assistant Professor of Architecture, School of Architecture, Princeton University
Ana María León Associate Professor of Architecture, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University
6.00 PM
Concluding Roundtable – on the future of PhD education in Architecture
